The recent landslides in southern Ethiopia, especially affecting the communities of Gamo-Gofa Zone, have once again revealed a painful truth: disasters rarely happen alone. In March 2026, the landslide triggered by heavy rain, and it killed at least 125 people, with the death toll rising to around 70 as search and rescue efforts continued.<br />The disaster has caused immense human and environmental loss. Entire communities have been severely impacted, leaving thousands of families in extremely vulnerable conditions without adequate food, shelter, clean water, or access to essential medical services.<br /><br />According to recent government reports, the landslide in Gofa Zone has caused extensive humanitarian impact, with over 10,000 people displaced and 125 lives tragically lost. A total of 687 houses have been completely destroyed, leaving nearly 2,000 households directly affected. Critical community infrastructure has also been impacted, including schools and two religious institutions that were destroyed. The disaster has severely affected vulnerable groups, with more than 185 children under the age of five impacted and over 50 lactating mothers displaced along with their children. In addition, farmlands have been degraded and crops completely damaged, while hundreds of livestock have been lost, further exacerbating the food security and livelihood crisis in the area.
