Wheelchair

The lack and inadequacy of wheelchair service provision, like many of the other assistive device service provisions, is the main limiting factor of enabling People With Spinal Cord Injuries (PWSCIs)to attain an optimum quality of life, particularly in developing Tanzania. The development and establishment of these services have been extremely inadequate due to several factors, such as lower priority given within the health sector, lack of trained personnel, service facilities, distribution, financing, and viable policies. This project is designed for the purpose of enabling people with PWSCIs in Tanzania to have access to affordable and appropriate wheelchair services.
Women in particular face ‘double discrimination’ and all our programmes make special provision for advancing the position of disabled women. Songambele is working to tackle the stigma and exclusion faced by individuals who are disabled and female.

Discrimination leads to the denial of their human rights and to their living in poverty. This project will challenge the discrimination faced by disabled women, helping them to access their right to work and employment and lift themselves out of poverty.
Songambele Initiative Organization has observed that the demand for wheelchairs is increasing tremendously due to accidents, violence and diseases. It was further estimated that most people who need a wheelchair don’t have one, and those who do often have wheelchairs that are of poor quality and do little to contribute to the socioeconomic integration of wheelchair users. This situation is affecting people with disabilities from receiving an education, marrying, having families, working to support themselves or their families, or otherwise participating in their communities.
Imported wheelchairs from abroad are usually not appropriate for conditions in Africa and developing countries in general, as they have been designed for indoor home and institutional use and cannot be repaired

At NAFF Foundation, we work closely with elderly people who are living with pain, weakness, and limited mobility. Many of them have suffered strokes, arthritis, injuries, or age-related conditions that make walking difficult. Some have been bedridden for months, not because they are too sick to recover, but because they do not have the right mobility support.

A wheelchair is more than just equipment — it is freedom, dignity, and hope.

For many elderly people in our care, the inability to move from one place to another affects every part of life. It prevents them from attending medical appointments, accessing physiotherapy sessions, visiting community gatherings, and even going outside to feel fresh air and sunlight. It also increases isolation and depression, because they feel trapped and dependent.

With a wheelchair, an elderly person can safely move from their bed to the therapy area, to the washroom, or outside for fresh air. It reduces the risk of falls and injuries, and it helps caregivers support them without physical strain. Most importantly, it restores confidence and encourages recovery through movement and rehabilitation.

At our Elderly Physiocare Centre, each donated wheelchair will support multiple elderly beneficiaries. It will be used daily for physiotherapy sessions, medical referrals, home visits, and community support activities.

By donating a wheelchair, you are not only giving equipment — you are giving an elderly person the chance to live with dignity, comfort, and independence again.
